Mungasdale House
Mungasdale House is on the Gruinard Estate and is situated on the west coast of Ross-shire, approximately 1½ miles from the mouth of the Gruinard River. The estate is seagirt in the north and west and this coastline offers some fine sandy beaches.
ACCOMMODATION The house is on Gruinard Bay and consists of a sitting room, dining room, coat and boot area, boiler/drying room and kitchen on the ground floor. The kitchen is equipped with an AGA, an electric cooker, microwave and dishwasher. The house has a telephone which tenants are requested to pay for on a usage basis in the honesty box provided. Downstairs there is a twin bedded room and also a shower room with hand basin and wc. Upstairs there are three twin bedded rooms, two with basins, and one double bedroom and two bathrooms. The accommodation can therefore sleep up to 10 persons. It is comfortably furnished and is an ideal house for a family holiday. Help in the house may be available by prior arrangement. Tenants will have to provide their own towels but the let includes sheets, pillowcases etc and electricity. FISHING on the RIVER GRUINARD (3 rods) This is one of the most attractive rivers on the west coast of Scotland and is approximately 6 miles in length. The river runs out of Loch-na-Sheallag and empties into Gruinard Bay. The river has several different types of pools some bouldery while others are flat and gravelly. Downstream from the Bridge Pool at the main road the river becomes rocky and very fast flowing in its last half mile to the sea. Loch-na-Sheallag itself is set in the most impressive surroundings with steeply sloping hills on either side and this loch was once one of the best sea trout lochs in Scotland although over the last few years catches have been disappointing. The fishing is by fly only and the river is divided into three beats of which the Gruinard has one beat. These beats are fished in daily rotation and the Gruinard Estate has the right for the maximum of three rods to fish one beat on the river at any one time. Each beat is approximately 2 miles long and the fishing is from both banks. The estate established a hatchery in 2001 with a view to restocking the river with pure Gruinard salmon. On average some 60,000 fry and eyed ova have been released each year into the river system since the hatchery started. It is hoped that fishermen will start to see the benefit of this long term programme in the near future. There is in addition a boat and 2 rods on Loch-na-Sheallag but as this boat is only to be used with the ghillie, days on the loch should be negotiated with the ghillie/stalker, Mr Bill Whyte during the tenants stay. STALKING Gruinard is one of the most delightful deer forests in Ross-shire comprising 27,000 acres. The highest point on the estate is Sgurr Fiona, which is 3474 ft above sea level. To the north and west the forest is seagirt by Little Loch Broom and Gruinard Bay. To the east lies the forest of Dundonnell while across Loch-na-Sheallag to the south are the forests of Fisherfield and Letterewe. |
