Lanrick Estate
The fishing at Lanrick is most attractive and combines wonderful scenery with comfortable accommodation. It is easily accessible and, being only 8 miles from Stirling and close to Perth, there are numerous local interests and attractions providing an ideal holiday for all the family.
The River Teith is the main tributary of the Forth river system and enjoys the third largest catchment area in Scotland. Rising in the Braes of Balqidder, the system is fed by five headwater lochs - Vennacher, Katrine, Lubnaig, Voil and Achray - which are responsible for providing a more even flow than most other rivers and contribute to the river as partial spate classification. The Teith joins the river Forth eight miles downstream at Stirling where the river becomes tidal before flowing towards Edinburgh in to the Firth of Forth. ACCOMMODATION For those not wishing to stay in a local hotel, of which there are several of varying standards and costs, the estate has a very comfortable, recently modernised cottage available for rent. Broich Cottage comprises of three twin bedded rooms with two bathrooms, one en-suite. All are attractively decorated to a very high standard. There is a spacious sitting room/dining room with a wood burning stove and a plentiful log supply in addition to a most efficient central heating and hot water system. There is a telephone, TV, and even a drinks cupboard with a wide selection of spirits and soft drinks available for guests who are requested to replenish the stock on their departure. The kitchen is fully equipped with an electric oven and hob, with all cutlery, glass and linen provided. Deep freeze, drying and laundry facilities are readily available and car parking and rod and equipment storage do not present a problem. Smoking is not permitted in the bedrooms or bathrooms. The Broich Cottage is normally self-catering but a cook can be arranged through one of the many agencies. As an alternative, Letter Farm Cooking can deliver prepared meals if required. Daily help in the cottage is available if adequate advance notice is given. Dogs are not allowed in the house but a kennel is available by arrangement. Dogs should be kept under control at all times when on the estate. Additional accommodation is available if required in the Annexe for an extra couple. FISHING The Lanrick water is situated on the edge of the Trossachs between Callander and Doune and extends for 3½ miles, divided into two beats. Two miles is single bank (Upper Lanrick beat) and 1½ miles is double bank fishing (Lower Lanrick beat). There are sixteen named pools including the well known and productive Weir Pool. The season extends from 1st February until 31st October. Each beat may be booked separately. A maximum of four rods will be available for rent on Lower Lanrick and 2 rods on Upper Lanrick. Normal fishing hours are from 9.00am until 5.30pm during which time a ghillie is available by prior request. Fishing hours may be adjusted for weather conditions and by agreement with the Estate Office. Situated in a delightfully remote area of magnificent woodland scenery, the river, reminiscent of a small Aberdeenshire Dee, is mostly streamy with big rocky boulders and deep mid-stream lies, offering perfect fly fishing conditions throughout the season using a 14 or 15ft rod. A shorter 11ft is more suitable during the summer months and for sea trout. Spey casting is easier when fishing from some of the wooded banks although much of the water can be covered with overhead casting especially when wading with breast waders. Lanrick enjoys an excellent traditional spring salmon run from the opening day of the season on 1st February. A lively sea trout run is enjoyed in April and May followed by the more unpredictable grilse run in June and July. The main run of autumn salmon, depending on rainfall, extends from mid August, and provides excellent sport until the close of the season at the end of October. Brown trout provide opportunities from mid March onwards. Traditional fly fishing is the only method of fishing permitted during normal weather conditions. A ghillie may be booked in advance on a daily or weekly basis. |
